Monday – 34th Week of Ordinary Time B – Memorial of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin and Martyr

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, as we gather on this memorial of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, we are invited not only to reflect on her extraordinary life but also to consider how her virtues resonate through the readings of today, particularly as we contemplate our walk of faith as disciples—followers, of the Lord Jesus, whom we remembered yesterday as the King of the Universe.

The first reading from the Book of Revelation offers a gripping image of the faithful—those who bear the mark of the Lamb upon their foreheads, singing a new hymn before the throne of God. These are the ones, we are told, who have been ransomed from the earth and follow the Lamb wherever He goes. They are unblemished, without deceit. This celebration of faithfulness and integrity resonates perfectly with the legacy of Saint Catherine.
Saint Catherine, a virgin and martyr of the early 4th century, is celebrated not only for her unwavering commitment to her Christian faith but also for her intellect and her courage in the face of persecution.

Born into a noble family in Alexandria, she became a figure of piety but also a learned woman. Tradition tells us she was blessed with great wisdom and eloquence, which she used to engage with and convert many of her contemporaries to Christianity.
Today’s Gospel presents us with the humble offering of a poor widow: “She put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.” This account reveals a profound truth about the nature of true sacrifice and giving. Catherine, too, offered her life completely for the sake of her faith. When faced with the threat of persecution by the emperor Maxentius, she boldly proclaimed her belief and defended the truth of the Gospel. Rather than recant, she chose to stand by her convictions, leading to her martyrdom.

What an inspiring example she offers us! Catherine not only gave her life but did so in a way that demonstrated the heart of the Gospel—the importance of integrity, sincerity, and total commitment. She is rightly considered a patron saint of philosophers and scholars, and her example encourages us to advance our understanding and to engage intelligently with our faith and the world around us. Just as the widow's genuine offering was more meaningful than those of the wealthy, so too is Catherine’s life a testament that what God desires is a heart fully devoted to Him, and this is our lifelong journey and endeavour—to become singular-minded in our unique and complete love for God.

Saint Catherine’s life reminds us that our quest for holiness involves not just lofty ideals or intellectual engagement but, most importantly, a lived faith that translates into acts of love, justice, and service to others. In our own journeys, as we navigate the complexities of a modern world, let us seek to follow the Lamb wherever He goes.

As we go forth today, let us carry the spirit of Saint Catherine in our hearts, aspiring to embody the unblemished witness of faith, the commitment to the truth, and the courage to stand for what is right. May we walk with integrity and always aspire to be a people that longs to see the face of God, truly reflecting the sacrifice and love of Christ in our lives first and foremost by how we serve and make sacrifices for the good of others. Saint Catherine, pray for us. Holy Mother Mary, Queen of Martyrs, pray for us who always have recourse to thee.
Amen.
