Dear brothers and sisters, today, we gather to reflect on the Word of God, which speaks to us with profound truth about our human existence and the sanctity of life. Our first reading from Job reminds us of the sovereignty and wisdom of God. Job, who suffered unspeakably, ultimately acknowledges the greatness of God’s purpose, saying, "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be hindered." This profound realization brings Job to a place of humility and repentance. It is a reminder that, regardless of our human understanding of the circumstances in our lives, the Lord reigns supreme, and His plan for us is good, just, and purposeful.
In the Gospel of Luke, we see Jesus rejoicing with His disciples, acknowledging their triumphs but also guiding their focus on something even greater: the eternal truth that their names are written in heaven. The exhilarating joy of their mission is not merely about power over demons; it is about the divine relationship they hold with God and how they’ve now had a firsthand glimpse of him in Christ. Indeed, our lives find their true meaning and fulfillment within this relationship, recognizing that Jesus is indeed the loving God who has always been with us, and wants us to be with him forever. Each of us are sacred to him, and so we should be to one another.
As we reflect on these readings, we cannot ignore the current moral landscape of our society where the sanctity of life is often overlooked. The most vulnerable among us—the elderly, the disabled, and especially the unborn—are increasingly marginalized and devalued. In a world that measures worth by productivity, how easily we forget the inherent value of every single human being made in the image of God!
Brothers and sisters, it is our duty as Christians and especially as Franciscans, to proclaim, uphold, and protect the sanctity of life. We are called not just to cherish life when it is easy but to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves, those who are helpless and often unseen. Saint Francis was on the forefront of ministering to the castaways, those left to rot at the cities garbage heaps. Today, as we focus our hearts and minds on this important issue, I want to encourage each of you to take concrete action in support of life.
This Sunday holds special significance, as it is also the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary – the Queen who said yes to God, so as to allow him to usher in an opportunity at new life, wherein he makes of us a new creation. We are therefore reminded of her profound intercessory power. Her yes to God exemplifies trust and faith in God’s plan, which personally begins for all of us at conception, even if we were in the mind and heart of God long before. Additionally, Saturday as you know is a day in which we honor the Blessed Mother, a time when our prayers can be united with hers to foster a deeper reverence for all life. Let us draw strength from Mary's example as we embrace our own call to do our best to protect and cherish life.
For our Canadian visitors to the website, many will participate in the LifeChain all over Canada—a peaceful, prayerful demonstration aimed at raising awareness about the value of every human life from the moment of conception until natural death. It is an opportunity for each of us to stand as a witness to the truth that life is a precious gift, deserving of protection and reverence. I urge you all to consider joining in solidarity with others who share this vision, holding signs and prayers for those who cannot fight for themselves. At the bottom of this homily, on the website, you will find all the known locations and times listed according to your province (if you live in Canada). There are over 300! Praise be to God. If you’re not in Canada, just do an online search for something similar close by to your house. And then, courage, the Lord is with you as you make yourself present on his frontlines.
Let us remember that our call is not merely to protest but to
embody a love that embraces life in all its complexities. We must support mothers in crisis, advocate for the elderly, and approach every life with compassion and understanding and as we know, charity begins at home. Yet fighting for the unborn goes even beyond these parameters, given the urgency of the vulnerability involved. In other words, if things are a bit strained on the home front, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go out and be a voice to the individuals unable to speak. Lives are at stake.
As we meditate on the Word of God today, let us also pray for the courage to engage in this important work with the spirit of Christ. Let us ask the Lord to soften our hearts and to open our eyes to see the beauty of life all around us—especially in those who are most in need. May we always rejoice in our relationship with God, and through our actions, may we honor those whose very existence reflects His glory, while also turning to our Blessed Mother for guidance and support in this sacred mission.
Our Lady, Mother of the Unborn, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Amen.
