Sunday – 17th Week of Ordinary Time B

Pope Francis has spoken warmly about the importance of grandparents in families and communities, recognizing their unique role in passing on faith, wisdom, and traditions to younger generations. He has emphasized that Grandparents’ Day, which he has set for the last Sunday in July, serves as an occasion to honor the elderly and to reflect on the treasure of familial bonds that grandparents represent, especially in nurturing love and faith in families.

In this light, we can draw connections between the Pope’s reflections, the readings for today, and Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus whom we just celebrated yesterday, on friday.

  1. The Blessing of Relationships: The story of Joachim and Anne, as the parents of the Virgin Mary and thus the grandparents of Jesus, highlights the importance of intergenerational relationships in the faith journey. Just as the readings illustrate God's provision and community, grandparents like Joachim and Anne provide invaluable support and guidance. Their role in nurturing Mary who subsequently nurtures Jesus emphasizes the deep spiritual impact that grandparents can have on their grandchildren's lives.
  2. Sharing Resources: In today’s first reading, we see the miracle of God’s abundance as a man brings a small offering of barley loaves, and through Elisha, it becomes more than enough to feed many. This reflects the very essence of how grandparents often share the little they have with those around them, contributing to family sustenance, both materially and spiritually. Grandparents, like Elisha, can be figures of wisdom and faith who help us see that God can multiply even the smallest contributions.
  3. Unity and Community: In the second reading from Paul to the Ephesians, we are urged to live in humility and unity. This calls to mind the role of grandparents as unifying figures in the family. They often serve as bridges between generations, fostering love and connection. Saints Joachim and Anne embodied this unity through their reverence for God and the nurturing of Mary, reinforcing peaceful relationships within the family structure.
  4. Faith and Abundance: The miracle of the loaves and fishes in today’s gospel echoes the idea of faith leading to abundance. When faced with a challenge—five thousand hungry people—Jesus calls upon the contributions of a child to perform a miracle. This reflects how grandparents can teach the importance of faith; they often instill confidence in younger generations that God will provide. Joachim and Anne, by nurturing Mary in faith, helped and encouraged her to trust in God's plan, preparing her for her role as the Mother of God.

Pope Francis’s words about Grandparents' Day remind us to value and celebrate our grandparents' role in our lives. This day offers a perfect opportunity to reflect on how figures like Joachim and Anne exemplify the vital intergenerational bonds of love, faith, and unity that define our Christian families. Just as Elisha and Jesus emphasized sharing and community, we can follow their examples by embracing our grandparents' gifts, nurturing our connections, and sharing our faith with the next generation. This celebration can be a moment to recognize the profound impact of family, especially through the wisdom and love of grandparents. Let us continue to pray for them, especially if they are already deceased.

We are not sure if Saints Joachim and Anne got to see Jesus while they were still alive, as the gospel reading on their feast day has Jesus reminding those around him, that many kings and prophets desired to see and hear what they were seeing, and didn’t have that opportunity. What we know with the certitude of faith, hope and love, is that eventually they and we will all get to see, the one who has loved us from eternity, created all things, and died on a cross so that we could be with him. May the Lord continue to bless us all, and in a particular way, our precious grandparents.
