Today we gather to celebrate the life and legacy of Saint Francis Fasani, a humble Franciscan friar who stood as a beacon of faith, charity, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Born in 1681 in the town of Lucera, Italy, he entered the Franciscan order at a young age, fully embracing the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. Saint Francis Fasani is remembered for his profound dedication to preaching, his commitment to the sacraments, and his compassionate care for the poor and the marginalized.
Saint Francis Fasani’s life was characterized by a deep love for the Eucharist and a passionate commitment to the spiritual formation of those in his care which makes him a special saint not only for this Franciscan website, but for this house of formation in which I live, being tasked with accompanying and guiding our young friars to their solemn profession where they will give their definitive promise to live in chastity, poverty and obedience for the rest of their lives. Keep our young men in your prayers please. All of us friars would like to become like this saint who became known for his eloquent preaching, which drew many to a deeper relationship with God. His sermons weren’t just words; they were full of the Holy Spirit's power, transforming lives and inspiring conversions. He also engaged in numerous charitable works, attending to the needs of the sick and feeding the hungry with relentless zeal.
Miracles attributed to Saint Francis Fasani often showcased his deep faith and connection to God. Many accounts cite instances of healing, guidance in times of trouble, and even miraculous provisions that reflected the compassion of Christ himself. His legacy was one of hope, affirming that through a life lived in accordance with God’s will, we can make a tremendous impact on the world around us.
As we reflect upon the readings from the Book of Revelation and the Gospel of Luke, we hear a powerful call to persevering faith amid trials. In Revelation 15:1-4, we witness a vision in which the faithful who have “won the victory over the beast” are standing before God, singing praises for His great and wonderful works. This image serves as a reminder that our ultimate hope lies in God’s triumph over evil, a truth
wholeheartedly lived out by Saint Francis Fasani.
In the Gospel of Luke (21:12-19), Jesus prepares his followers for persecution and adversity, promising that in their darkest moments, they will be granted wisdom and the strength to bear witness to his name. Saint Francis Fasani exemplified this teaching through his life. He faced challenges, whether it be misunderstandings, opposition to his charitable acts, or the trials that came from living a life deeply rooted in Christ's love. Yet he remained steadfast, trusting in God's providence and grace.
The life of Saint Francis Fasani invites us all to consider our commitment to faith, particularly during times of difficulty. Are we ready to give testimony to God’s goodness, even when we go through difficult times? Like the angels in Revelation, who celebrated God’s just and true ways, we too are called to worship Him, especially in our sufferings. They remind us that the journey toward holiness may not always be easy, but it is always worth the struggle, for eternity awaits. May we not shy away from embracing our role as witnesses to Christ, proclaiming His gospel in every area of our lives through the powerful intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, and through the faithful courage of all the saints who inspire us to be bold for God, and courageous in our endeavour to worship him alone, who is our all.
Amen.
