2nd Week of Lent - Wednesday C – Solemnity of Saint Joseph

Published on 18 March 2025 at 13:04

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we gather to celebrate the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a day dedicated to one of the most overlooked yet profoundly significant figures in our faith. As we continue our Lenten journey, let us reflect on how Saint Joseph can guide us in this season of penance, reflection, and preparation for the joy of Easter.

In the first reading from 2 Samuel (2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14a, 16), God makes a promise to King David, assuring him that his kingdom will endure forever and that He will raise an heir strong and mighty—a promise fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Son of David. This moment underscores God’s faithfulness and the importance of family lineage in His divine plan. Saint Joseph, as the earthly father of Jesus and the husband of Mary, embodies this lineage. He fulfills the role of protector and provider, ensuring that God’s promises are realized through his steadfast loyalty and righteousness.

Joseph is described as a "righteous man" in the Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 1:19). In the face of uncertainty and the social scandal Mary's conception of Jesus provoked, Joseph encountered fear and confusion, yet he chose faith over doubt. The angel's words, “Do not be afraid,” resonated deeply with him, allowing Joseph to embrace his pivotal role in God’s redemptive plan. As we find ourselves confronting our own fears and uncertainties during this Lenten season, we can look to Saint Joseph's example. He teaches us that faith in God and his power can dispel all the darknesses of doubt that often plague our hearts.

In the second reading from Romans (Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22), we hear about Abraham, who became the father of many nations through faith. This connection to Joseph highlights the overarching theme of faith and lineage in our salvation history. Joseph, like Abraham, trusted in God's promises; he believed in what seemed impossible—accepting his role within God’s divine narrative. This Lenten season, let us ask ourselves: what are the impossible things we need to trust God with? What fears do we need to hand over to Him?

As we journey through Lent, we ought to remember that personal sacrifice and prayer are essential components of deepening our faith. Just as Joseph submitted to God’s will, let us seek the grace to trust in His plan. When we are tempted to lose hope, we remember Psalm 89, which declares, "The son of David will live forever." This assurance

comes not solely from earthly lineage but from a committed faith, a trust passed down through generations arriving at Jesus who himself is God immortal.

Saint Joseph also teaches us about the importance of obedience and humility. In the Gospel, after the angel's visitation and instruction, he did not hesitate. “When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him” (Matthew 1:24a). His quick compliance reminds us of our call to be attentive to God’s voice and to act upon His invitations in our lives.

This Lent, let us ask for the strength to respond to God’s invitations, even when they challenge us or compel us to step out of our comfort zones.
In a world filled with distraction, confusion, and voices that try to lead us astray, we can find solace in Saint Joseph's example. He teaches us to remain grounded through prayer, to be diligent in our duties, and to be courageous in our faith. Just as Joseph protected and provided for Mary and Jesus, he will intercede for us, asking God to fortify us during this Lenten season as we prepare our hearts for the resurrection.
Brothers and sisters, may we invite Saint Joseph into our Lenten practices this year. As we engage in prayer, fasting, and charitable works, let us draw inspiration from his fidelity and love. Trust in his intercession, for he is not just a figure of the past; he is a living witness of faith who reigns in heaven with Christ and our Blessed Mother and can guide us on our spiritual journey.

As we prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter, let us embrace the words of the Responsorial Psalm and declare with confidence, "The son of David will live forever." Through our faith in Christ, whom Saint Joseph always considered his treasure, may we experience renewal and transformation this Lent, so that we too may always be cognizant of the fact that we have been blessed beyond anything our imaginations can fathom. Most Holy Mother of God, pray for us who have recourse to thee!
Amen.
