Monday – 3rd Week of Advent C

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, as we gather together on this third Monday of Advent, our readings continue to prepare us for the coming of our Lord for that great and awesome day. The prophetic words of Balaam remind us of God's divine vision that surpasses human understanding. In the midst of confusion and difficulty in our world today—whether it be political turmoil, social injustices, or the struggles we face in our personal lives—Balaam's proclamation calls us to remember to lift our eyes and seek the truth that the Lord reveals.

Balaam, moved by the Spirit of God, sees the tents of Israel, beautifully encamped and blessed like gardens beside a stream. This scene evokes images of harmony, abundance, and divine provision. It is a reminder of what God desires for His people—a community flourishing in His love and grace. As we navigate our current events, we must ask ourselves how we can cultivate an environment reflective of this blessing. It requires unity and compassion, recognizing our interconnectedness beyond our differences, much like Francis of Assisi sought to do when Jesus called him to “rebuild” his Church, by the example of his loving and sacrificial ministry to the poor. The “Lesser Brothers” or “Friars Minor” were to change the Church forever by simply living the gospel our Lord had come to proclaim.
In the face of adversity, we are called to be nothing less than instruments of peace, much like Francis, who embraced poverty and humility. He truly understood the words we hear in the Psalm today: "Teach me your ways, O Lord." Each day presents us the choice to either react out of fear or to embrace God's guiding hand, leading us toward compassion and justice. In our communities, we must embody those teachings, supporting the vulnerable and marginalized, knowing that these efforts glorify God while reflecting His heart to the world.
The Gospel passage complements this reflection as we witness Jesus confronted by the religious leaders questioning His authority. They are unable to recognize the divine within their midst due to pride and fear of loss of control. They miss the fresh perspective that Jesus offers—the very truth that is at the core of His message and mission. In our current times, we too are often met with opposition when we seek to speak for the voiceless or challenge unjust systems.
Like Christ, we must confidently claim our identity as children of God, understanding that our authority comes from Him alone. In this season of Advent, we are invited to let the anticipation of His coming inspire us to speak truth, embrace humility, and practice discernment influenced by love. Emulating Francis, let us not cower in silence, but let our voices be advocates for justice, echoing the cry of the voiceless.
As we await the joyful celebration of the Nativity, and the iconic images of Mother with Child that accompany it, let us pray for the clarity of vision that Balaam experienced and for the courage to speak God’s truth in love as Mary, our Mother did. She is a very powerful example of faith to us, and purity in intention and action, and what it means to treasure the things of the Lord in our hearts. Let us turn to her always as we continue to seek first and foremost the Kingdom of God knowing that the Holy Trinity desire to be one with us, now and always.
Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, may the good Lord shine his face upon you and give you peace. May he protect and guide you and keep you safe as you continue your advent journey with faith, hope and the charity of one who loves God above all things. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Amen.
